Mentha × piperita

Menthol-driven cooling that outperformed minoxidil in murine trials.

Region

Pacific Northwest, USA · India

Form

Steam-distilled essential oil

Shelf

24 months sealed

Botanical oil

Key finding

4 wks

Time to visible follicle-depth increase in murine trials (Oh 2014)

Effective dose · Effective range 0.5%–3% in scalp formulas; always diluted, never neat.
01

The brief.

Origin

Steam-distilled from Mentha × piperita — a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint — cultivated primarily in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and the mint belt of Uttar Pradesh, India.

Extraction

Whole plant is steam-distilled shortly after harvest. Standardised to ≥38% menthol and ≥15% menthone.

Sustainability

Peppermint is a perennial that regenerates from rhizomes — one planting yields 3+ years of harvest. Our Oregon source uses integrated pest management, no neonicotinoids.

02

How it works.

Menthol activates TRPM8 cold receptors in scalp tissue, which trigger vaso-dilation and a measurable increase in local blood flow. More circulation means more oxygen and nutrients reaching the follicle base — where new hair is built.

CautionAlways diluted. Undiluted peppermint can burn. Avoid in children under 6 (menthol laryngospasm risk).

Delivers

  • 01Boosts scalp blood flow via menthol-triggered vaso-dilation
  • 02Outperformed 3% minoxidil for follicle depth in a 4-week study (Oh et al., 2014)
  • 03Cooling sensation soothes tight, tension-prone scalps
  • 04Anti-microbial — reduces the yeast implicated in dandruff

Heritage.

The record

Peppermint's therapeutic use is documented in the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BCE) and in Roman texts as a headache remedy. It only entered European pharmacopoeias in the 1750s when John Ray identified it as a distinct hybrid.

Traditional use

Roman scalp tonic; Ayurvedic 'pitta-cooling' herb; American frontier headache poultice.

Naturally found in

  • Sterile hybrid — reproduced only by cuttings
  • Commercially grown in the USA, India, China, Morocco
  • Naturalised in temperate wetlands worldwide

09

People often ask.

  • Why does peppermint tingle so much?

Menthol triggers your cold receptors — the tingling means the actives are hitting the follicle. It fades in 5–10 minutes.

  • Can I use peppermint every day?

Yes, at 1–2% dilution. Higher concentrations should stay as weekly treatments.
